The lawsuit, filed in Harris County District Court, claims the brewery began receiving notices of alleged lease violations in January. According to court filings, the landlord accused 8th Wonder of occupying space not covered under the lease agreement, being underinsured, and owing late fees. 8th Wonder argues the landlord is "manufacturing lease defaults" as a pretext for eviction in an area expected to see increased demand and development tied to the World Cup.
"It would be terrible for the walkability of the area we have right now," resident Kristian Castillo said. Representatives for 8th Wonder's parent company, Bayou City Hemp Company, and Macey Family Properties did not respond to requests for comment. A judge has granted a temporary injunction blocking eviction efforts for now. Court records state 8th Wonder "has not materially breached the lease" and prohibit the landlord from seeking eviction while the case proceeds.
