As airfare rises across the board, a new report by going.com suggests travelers can still find bargains if they know where to look.
released its annual Cheapest Cities, identifying domestic and international destinations with the most consistently affordable flights.
"Options are tightening, but we still want travelers to understand that cheap flights can still exist in this market," said Katy Nastro of Going. The Cheapest Cities list is based on Going's proprietary deal data from the past year, including the most recent two months, a period when average airfares climbed sharply.
"This is based off of proprietary deal data from the past 12 months, as well as the last two months where we really saw average prices skyrocket," Nastro said. Airfare is up 14 percent year over year, according to the report. Domestic summer flights have increased 18 percent, while international flights are up 10 percent.
"We're still seeing deals to our number one domestic spot, which is Orlando. You can fly from the Philadelphia area down to Orlando across multiple dates in the summer for only one 26 round trip, sometimes even less than that for under a hundred dollars," she said. For travelers eyeing Europe, Barcelona, Spain, stands out as an affordable option, particularly with connections from Philadelphia.
"Saving upwards of 50% on average per ticket," Nastro said. "So roughly $468 is the average going deal that we've seen in the last 12 months to Barcelona. And we're still seeing similar prices to that from the Philadelphia area, but in say the fall months of September and October.
" Milan and Dublin also rank as strong international deals, while prices are higher for London, Amsterdam and Reykjavik, Iceland. Overall, San Jose, Costa Rica, tops the international Cheapest Cities list, followed by Guatamala City, according to Going.
