New Jersey Transit will lower the price of roundtrip rail tickets to the World Cup this summer from $150 to $105. The roundtrip 18-miles trip from Penn Station in New York City to MetLife Stadium usually costs just under $13, butThe tickets go on sale next Wednesday, May 13, and must be booked in advance.
NJ Transit is continuing to solicit sponsors ahead of that date, and it is possible ticket prices could decrease further, depending on future private funding. NJ Transit estimates it will cost $48 million to shut down its normal service to accommodate World Cup service.
"Governor Sherrill has been clear that FIFA should contribute to transport its fans to World Cup games. Since it hasn't, she directed NJ Transit to seek private and non-taxpayer dollars to significantly reduce the fare. The Governor appreciates all the companies that have already stepped up to lower the costs for ticket holders. She will continue to ensure the World Cup is an experience that benefits fans and all New Jerseyans.
" The matches begin on June 13 and four will take place on weekends. Three weekday matches are in the early afternoon but the June 22 match is at 8 p.m., so the four-hour restriction will coincide directly with the evening rush hour.
