The FAA and NTSB are investigating the May 3 incident at Newark International Airport. New video appears to show a United Airlines flight striking a light pole and skirting a bakery truck driving on the New Jersey Turnpike on Sunday as the plane landed at Newark International Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident that took place around 2 p.m. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Flight 169 was making its final approach onto Runway 29 when it "struck an object," causing damage to a light post and a southbound tractor-trailer.
"Based on a preliminary investigation, while a United Airlines Aircraft was approaching the runway, a landing tire and the underside of the plane collided with a pole and a tractor-trailer," NJ State Police said in a statement following the incident. "The pole then struck a Jeep traveling on the NJTPK. The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
"'Inches from disaster': NTSB investigating plane's collision on final approach to Newark Airport Chuck Paterakis, vice president of transportation for Schmidt Bakery and owner of H&S Family of Bakeries, told ABC News that Baker's Express was delivering a load of bread product to the Newark depot at the airport when "the driver experienced a commercial plane tires landing on the tractor or brushing the top of the tractor. " Paterakis identified the driver as Warren Boardley of Baltimore and said he got some glass in his arm, but his injuries were non-life-threatening.
"Everybody, the driver and everybody on the plane, should be very fortunate, because it could have been the opposite of what happened, and a little help from God went a long way tonight for everybody on the plane, and including the driver," Paterakis said. United said in a statement that the plane landed safely and taxied to the gate normally and there were no reported injuries among the crew or passengers.
"Our maintenance team is evaluating damage to the aircraft. We will conduct a rigorous flight safety investigation into the incident and our crew has been removed from service as part of the process," the airline said in a statement. The Boeing 767 was arriving from Venice and was carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew members, according to the airline.
"The investigation will examine multiple factors, including flight operations, meteorological conditions, human performance, crew resource management, aircraft performance and air traffic control," the NTSB said in a statement. United has been ordered to secure the cockpit voice recorder, as well as the flight data recorder for the investigation. Related Topics
