The Finish the Ride/Finish the Run event promoting road safety paid tribute to Regan Cole Graham, a pregnant cyclist killed in a January crash in Playa del Rey.
The race is part of the Streets Are For Everyone movement, founded by Damian Kevitt, who lost his leg after being struck by a driver in Griffith Park in 2013. The movement promotes safer streets and shared responsibility among drivers, cyclists, runners, and pedestrians.
This year the race is honoring the life of Regan Cole Graham, a 36-year-old expectant mother who was killed in January when she was"They were just such active people and she's so smart, so she was a genuine, funny person, and it's such traumatic loss we don't have her anymore," said Caitlin Cole, Regan's sister. Caitlin works at a trauma center and says she sees firsthand the number of preventable accidents that take place.
In her honor, Caitlin will be finishing the ride Regan wasn't able to complete, biking a 12-mile loop on her sister's blue bike.
" We all deserve to be able to come home. My family deserves me to be able to come home. Other families deserve their loved ones to be able to come home. Regan should've come home that day.
Ophelia should be here like with us so this is something that is really important to me," said Cole. The Auto Club of Southern California is a proud partner with SAFE. On Saturday, May 2, Finish The Run includes 1K Kids & Puppy Runs, 5K, 10K, 15K, and Half Marathon. Loved ones are remembering a pregnant mother and Google executive who was hit and killed while riding a bike with her family in Playa del Rey.
May is National Bicycle Safety Month, and with bicycle and pedestrian fatalities climbing nationwide and summer travel approaching, those out on the street have had to adjust their routines.
"You have to be really aware so I stopped listening to music when I run just to be more aware of the cars and the people, the bikes,"' said Rebecca Finke, a local runner. Representatives with the The Auto Club of Southern California say these types of accidents are preventable.
"These are preventable if we can slow down, give more space as drivers at least 3 feet of space between our vehicles and bicyclist when passing them we need to remember that bicyclists are not just obstacles. They're people," said Doug Shupe with Auto Club of Southern California. On Sunday, May 3, Finish The Ride offers cycling distances of 12 miles, 20 miles, 35 miles, 50 miles, 62 miles, and 100 miles, welcoming participants of all experience levels.
