As the World Cup approaches, $150 New Jersey Transit train tickets to get to games at MetLife Stadium are drawing criticism across the region. On Friday, the president and CEO of NJ Transit is scheduled to meet with community members and local business leaders in Lyndhurst to address concerns and discuss transportation plans ahead of the international tournament.
The Meadowlands Chamber has been holding ongoing discussions focused on the World Cup transportation strategy to make sure the business community is prepared for an influx of fans. Those discussions continue Friday as key officials gather at the chamber's headquarters. NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri is set to serve as the keynote speaker. Members of the World Cup Host Committee will also attend to help address concerns from local businesses about logistics and access during the matches.
NJ Transit plans to transport an estimated 40,000 soccer fans to and from MetLife Stadium over eight days, calling it the largest sporting event ever hosted in the region. Transit officials estimate the service will cost about $6 million per day, totaling roughly $48 million across all eight days. Transit officials say the cost should be covered by fans attending the games, not by New Jersey taxpayers.
Under the current plan, round-trip NJ Transit train tickets to World Cup matches will cost $150, while bus fares are set at $80. Tickets must be purchased online in advance, will be nontransferable and will only be valid for specific departure times. Transit options are being heavily prioritized, and fans are strongly discouraged from trying to walk to MetLife Stadium.
Authorities say Routes 3 and 120 will be closely monitored, with police patrolling throughout the area to manage traffic and safety. Have a breaking news tip or an idea for a story we should cover?
