Wadsworth schools ask voters for income tax to address fiscal trouble

The state has placed Wadsworth Schools in fiscal precaution, mandating the district develop a plan.

WADSWORTH, Ohio - Wadsworth City Schools will ask voters to approve a 1.5% income tax on the May 5 ballot as the district works to address financial trouble under state oversight.

The state has placed Wadsworth Schools in fiscal precaution, mandating the district develop a plan. The district’s plan includes cuts and the proposed tax.

Social Security, pensions and veteran benefits would be exempt.

Beck said shrinking state support has contributed to the district’s financial challenges. He said the state covered 50% of the district’s budget a decade ago and now covers about 37%.

The district is making cuts and negotiating with staff. Beck said the district has renegotiated with its union and implemented a freeze. The district is also exploring cost cutting through healthcare by offering higher deductible healthcare plans.

The district’s financial recovery plan, submitted to the state, outlines significant staffing reductions, a 7% cut to certified teachers, 5% to support staff, and 13% to administrative staff, all targeted for fiscal year 2027.

Board president Tim Beck said he hopes most of those cuts happen through attrition, meaning the district would leave positions unfilled when employees retire or resign rather than laying off current staff.

Gary Kahl, a Wadsworth resident with a “Vote Yes” sign in his front yard, said he worries a no vote could drive people away from the community. “Wadsworth schools are really good and we need to keep them that way,” Kahl said. “If the school system does go down, it’s going to take people away.”
