Monday, April 27, 2026 6:57PMLosing a job can be a financial and emotional shock, and with layoffs continuing across major industries, experts say workers facing that reality should focus on perspective, networking and new tools to move forward.
Nike and Meta recently announced they were cutting hundreds of workers, and many laid-off employees may be left asking how they will reenter the job market. Experts say job loss can affect more than a paycheck. It can undermine confidence and make the search for new employment more difficult. They say perspective is critical.
"I think it's really important that regardless of whether or not it's due to a restructuring or something else, that people really don't internalize a layoff," said Monique Kelley. Kelley teaches a career readiness course at Boston University and emphasizes the importance of consistent networking, not just when someone is actively looking for a job.
"LinkedIn is the best ... 1.2 billion users are on it, but only 1% are using it regularly, and that means about three times a week," she said. "It's a great place to not say, 'Hi, I need a job,' but to instead say, 'Here's the work that I've been doing or can do. " While artificial intelligence is often blamed for contributing to layoffs, Kelley said it can also help job seekers strengthen their applications.
"I'm teaching my students to not be afraid of AI, but to embrace it, and see how you can use it to actually be a stronger candidate," Kelley said. Kelley added that a layoff can also create an opportunity to reevaluate goals, change career paths and pursue work that better aligns with personal passions.
