Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the off-duty HCSO deputy was taken to the hospital after he was shot while asleep in his residence in what appears to be 'a random act of violence.'

Sunday, April 26, 2026 6:24PMInvestigators said an off-duty Harris County Sheriff's deputy was shot while he was asleep in his home in north Houston overnight.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers were dispatched to a call about a drive-by shooting at 1:06 a.m. at a home on Burress Street near Bauman Road. HPD said the off-duty deputy was found in his bed with gunshot wounds to his abdomen. Houston police added that the off-duty deputy's family was home during the incident, including two children.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office confirmed the off-duty deputy was employed by the agency, adding that he is 40 years old and a three-year veteran assigned to the HCSO Patrol division. According to HCSO, the off-duty deputy was asleep in his home when he was hit by gunfire in "what appears to be a random act of violence.

" Officials said Houston Fire EMS took the deputy to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery and is recovering in fair condition. Authorities said that HPD is leading the investigation and that there is currently no suspect description or suspect vehicle description. HCSO advised anyone who has any information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-TIPS .
