Elevator outage forces Bronx tenants to climb 9 flights of stairs: Exclusive

A 64-year-old tenant at 747 Concourse Village West says she prepares herself every night for the climb she must make the next day: nine flights of stairs without a working elevator.

Residents at an apartment building in the Bronx are sounding off as they wait for their out-of-service elevators to be repaired -- an issue that has forced some of the older and sick tenants to choose between climbing several flights of stairs, or staying inside.

A 64-year-old tenant at 747 Concourse Village West says she prepares herself every night for the climb she must make the next day: nine flights of stairs without a working elevator.

"I tell you yesterday I felt like I was going to pass out," she said while stopping to catch her breath. "I had a stroke so one side of my body is not all there, you know. ""I just catch my breath and I'm able to go another 13 steps," she said. At one point, she asked for water.

Later, she added, "Yeah, I have to prepare myself mentally. The night before.

" Tenants say the building's two elevators have been unreliable since water damage from a February fire knocked them out of service. According to residents, one elevator was repaired but stopped working again about a week ago.

"It's not the first time. It is the longest time now that it's been down," tenant Werner Diaz said.

"We're going on our second week. And we just can't take it anymore.

" Signs posted in the lobby state the elevators are out of service due to maintenance. Residents say at least one elevator has been down since February and that they have not seen repair crews working to restore service.

"No building should be two elevators out," tenant Ashley Creighton said. "You have sick people, you have elderly waiting downstairs for someone to help them just walk upstairs. It's really insane.

"The city's Departments of Buildings and Housing Preservation and Development were contacted for comment, as was the building's management company. "We are routing an elevator inspector to this address. We can send you an update when we receive results from this inspection," the statement said.

"747 Concourse Village W has two elevators. DOB inspectors were at the building for an inspection on 2/4/2026 and issued an OATH/ECB violation to the building owner for failure to maintain due to an out of service elevator. Inspectors returned to the building on 2/12/2026, and issued a DOB violation and Cease Use Order for the other elevator in the building, due to water damage.

The building owner's hired elevator repair company has not requested a reinspection from DOB that would lift the Cease Use Order for the damaged elevator.
