West U police said while officers tried to stop two suspects fleeing in a vehicle, an HPD officer performed a PIT maneuver to get them to stop. The driver and passenger were taken into custody.
Monday, April 20, 2026 6:30PMAuthorities say they used a PIT maneuver to bring a chase to a crashing end in southeast Houston overnight. The West University Police Department said that at about 3 a.m.
on Monday, officers responded to reports of someone breaking into a car in the 3700 block of Nottingham.Officers said they searched the area and found the suspect vehicle in the 3700 block of Arnold, along with a suspect on foot wearing a ski mask. When they tried to confront the suspect, he entered the passenger side of that vehicle and took off, resulting in a chase that lasted about 43 minutes, police said. West U PD said multiple agencies assisted in the chase, including the Houston Police Department, Bellaire Police Department, and Harris County Constable Precinct 7, as well as an HPD helicopter unit and K-9 team. The pursuit came to an end in the 6400 block of Del Rio on Houston's south side, when officers said an HPD unit used a PIT maneuver to stop the suspect vehicle. Bellaire PD said when this was happening, one of their officers had to swerve to not strike other vehicles, and crashed into a fire hydrant and a parked vehicle. The department said the officer who crashed had minor injuries. An ABC13 crew captured a vehicle on its side, damage to two other vehicles, including the Bellaire police car, and a utility pole snapped in half. Police said they arrested the driver, Precious Tugwell, and the passenger, Caleb Taylor, who were taken to the hospital to be checked out. Tugwell will be charged with evading arrest, and Taylor with two counts of burglary of a motor vehicle, West U police said.
