The hospital's 'Pediatric Health Chat' is designed to give families reliable, evidence-based information at a time when many parents turn to the internet for medical guidance.
Thursday, April 16, 2026 10:57PMChildren's Hospital of Philadelphia has introduced a new online resource aimed at countering the spread of pediatric health misinformation, which doctors say can lead to fewer vaccinations and more children ending up sick.
The hospital's "Pediatric Health Chat" is designed to give families reliable, evidence-based information at a time when many parents turn to the internet for medical guidance. "If you look at the data, parents, in particular, are getting a lot of their health information online now, and there's great reasons for that. It's very accessible. You can ask about topics of things online," a CHOP representative said. "But CHOP wants to make sure what you're reading online is accurate." The project uses a survey-style tracker that allows clinicians to report and describe the questions and concerns they encounter in their practices. The website covers topics ranging from vaccines to supplements, including explanations about why newborns receive the vitamin K shot shortly after birth. Clinical neonatologist Joanna Parga-Belinkie said recent research underscores the need for clearer information. "There was just a JAMA paper published by one of our researchers, Dr. Christian Scott, that looked at increasing rates of vitamin K refusal," she said. "It gets confused with vaccination, and people just don't understand the importance of it. What it is really important for is preventing life-threatening bleeding in babies." Doctors say vaccine refusal rates are rising, fueled in part by online misinformation. The new platform also addresses trending topics such as goat milk formula and the use of oregano to strengthen a child's immune system, with the goal of helping families distinguish fact from fiction. CHOP officials say they hope the tool will break the cycle of misinformation and give parents a trusted place to turn for answers.
