If you love Broadway and a good rom-com, there's a new musical you may want to see.
"Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York" follows the story of a cynical New Yorker and a bright-eyed tourist, from their meet-cute to an adventure across the city. And yes, there really is a cake involved.
What happens when a jaded, no-nonsense New Yorker meets an upbeat British tourist? That's the question at the heart of the new musical, "Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York." But the real heart of the show comes from stars Christiani Pitts and Sam Tutty as they navigate secrets, chance encounters, an unlikely connection and one unforgettable 48 hours. Joelle Garguilo: I didn't know what to expect when I sat down, and then it was everything and then some. What do you admire about the people you get to play? Sam Tutty: Dougal is a very brave person. He loves everyone. He loves people. He loves love. He is, deep down, a very profound and interesting human being.Christiani Pitts: I love that you said brave, because I would also describe Robin as having that very brave characteristic. Joelle Garguilo: When you watch the show, you realize it's these 48 hours that completely change the lives of these two strangers. Can you think of 48 hours when your life changed the most?Sam Tutty: It was "Dear Evan Hansen," which changed my life and my career. I was here for two days. I landed, saw a matinee, had the evening off, auditioned the next morning and then flew home. It was probably less than 48 hours. I landed in the morning and got the call.Christiani Pitts: I did. I have a 3-year-old. The day before I went to the hospital, I went to see The Woman King. I waddled out of those seats, and then, quite literally, the next day I gave birth to my daughter. There was something about watching that woman, she's incredible, that helped my body say, "Oh yeah, we're ready." That was a wild 48 hours. Joelle Garguilo: The show is called "Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York," but there's no bigger slice of cake than the one at the Carnegie Diner.Christiani Pitts: That takes the cake.Sam Tutty: Fun. I'm learning the subway. I'm getting better at the subway.Joelle Garguilo: And you are superhuman. What is something people wouldn't know about being a working mom on Broadway? Christiani Pitts: How incredible the human body is and how it adjusts to lack of sleep, builds stamina and still does the job. When I go home, job number one kicks back in. People wouldn't realize just how strong our bodies are - and that a 3-year-old makes a very good gym buddy. Zora is right there with me.
