Thursday, April 16, 2026 4:55PMSecurity video shows the moment a car careened into City News Cafe near Cicero Avenue and Irving Park Road Thursday morning.
The crash happened during a pursuit with Chicago police at about 4:30 a.m. CPD officers were on patrol when they saw the black Kia run a red light, police said. The car also matched the description of a Kia that had been reported stolen.
As police tried to pull the driver over, police said they sped away, lost control and crashed into the business on Cicero. Four people were taken into a custody: 17-year-old boy, 22-year-old man, 23-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man.
'This is the first time that I've ever seen in any devastation like this and it's sickening,' employee Darrell Hackler said. Longtime cafe regulars arrived to get their morning coffee and were shocked to find out what happened.
Forty-fifth Ward Alderman James Gardiner said he's going to do everything in his power to make sure the cafe reopens. 'This is going to be a heavy cost to our local business City News,' Gardiner said. 'I encourage everyone in the community if they have an opportunity to come by and support.'
ABC7 blurred the faces of the men involved, because it was not immediately known if they would face charges.
