La mujer, identificada por la policía como Noemi Guzmán, de 31 años, fue impactada de bala tras negarse a soltar el cuchillo y luego cortar al niño, según un comunicado de prensa del Departamento de Policía de Omaha.
El niño se reunió con su cuidador y fue trasladado al hospital por heridas no consideradas mortales, según la policía.
El incidente ocurrió el martes por la mañana. La policía de Omaha respondió a la Walmart en 72nd Street poco antes de las 9:15 a.m. tras recibir llamadas al 911 sobre una mujer armada con un 'cuchillo grande', según el comunicado de prensa de la policía.
El video de vigilancia de la tienda mostró a Guzmán robando el cuchillo dentro de la tienda y luego, se acercó al niño y a su guardián y los amenazó con el cuchillo, dijo la policía.
La policía dijo que Guzmán forzó al guardián a caminar delante del carrito mientras el niño permanecía adentro, guiando al guardián a través de la tienda hasta el estacionamiento, donde llegaron los policías poco después.
'La Sra. Guzmán hizo múltiples amenazas con el cuchillo', dijo la policía en el comunicado. 'Los policías le dieron varias órdenes verbales a la Sra. Guzmán para que soltara el cuchillo. Ella se negó a soltar el arma y cortó al niño. Los dos oficiales dispararon sus armas, impactando a la Sra. Guzmán'.
'Los policías que respondieron actuaron con profesionalidad y tomaron medidas directas para intervenir y salvar la vida de un niño', dijo el jefe de policía de Omaha, Todd Schmaderer, en un comunicado.
