The victim's family left court on Sunday afternoon, satisfied that a suspect is finally in custody for the murder of 30-year-old Andrew Garay. "That was one of our biggest fears, that somebody wasn't going to be held accountable for it. And we're glad to see someone is being held accountable," said Karjan Dambaugh the victim's cousin. That someone is 35-year-old Jonathan Roldan. Police took him into custody late last week in connection withGaray, who was a U.S. Army veteran, had been dating Roldan's ex-girlfriend for several years. Roldan was with her for 17 years before that, and has two children with her. Prosecutors said witnesses identified Roldan as a suspect early in their investigation. They say a surveillance camera also captured him at the scene on the night of the murder.Army veteran and father killed in Humboldt Park shooting remembered as selfless, hardworking Garay had just dropped his girlfriend off at her home in the Humboldt Park neighborhood and was waiting for her to go inside, prosecutors said. Roldan allegedly walked up from the gangway and fired one shot through the driver's side window, hitting Garay in the forehead and killing him. "He was assassinated. This wasn't spur-of-the-moment. This was planned. It was clear from the beginning," Dambaugh said."I still struggled Daly with believing he's gone. There are times I grabbed my phone with the instinct of calling him or sending him a quick text, and then, it hits us all over again," Dambaugh said.. The judge ordered him held in jail pending trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for next week.
