The effort was formally announced with the launch of the South Jersey 250 initiative, which aims to recognize both the nation's 250th anniversary on July 4 and South Jersey's role in the American Revolution.

As communities across the country prepare for the nation's semiquincentennial, South Jersey officials are highlighting the region's own Revolutionary War history and planning a slate of public events to mark the occasion.

The effort was formally announced with the launch of the South Jersey 250 initiative, which aims to recognize both the nation's 250th anniversary on July 4 and South Jersey's role in the American Revolution. Planned activities include re-enactments, educational programs, a race series and a tavern tour. Town criers were among those helping spread the message that Revolutionary War history extends beyond Philadelphia and into South Jersey. "It's important that we all recognize the important role that South Jersey has played during the American Revolution, and not to mention Camden's significant contributions over the past 250 years," said Camden Mayor Vic Cartarphen. Several historic sites are expected to play prominent roles in the celebrations. In Camden, the Benjamin Cooper House is set to open in June as a new Revolutionary War museum. "It was the site of a lot of Revolutionary War activity because that's where the British crossed over from Philadelphia into New Jersey at the northernmost Cooper's Ferry," said Chris Perks of the Camden County Historical Society. Along with showcasing history, local officials are also emphasizing the potential economic impact of the America 250 celebrations. They say South Jersey is preparing to welcome visitors from across the country and is hoping those guests will stay, dine and spend time on this side of the Delaware River. Officials pointed to past major events in Philadelphia, including the Pope's visit and rowing regattas, when hotels and restaurants in South Jersey were filled. "We anticipate a lot more hotel stays this year in Camden County," said Camden County Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli. "We're beginning to hear that it's already happening, as far as reservations for the summer. And a lot of these hotels are marketed as part of the Philadelphia area." Organizers say events are planned not only around July 4 but also in the weeks leading up to it.
