Stay with Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg and the Eyewitness News AccuWeather team for storm updates through the weekendA developing coastal storm will move up the Eastern Seaboard Sunday into Monday, bringing a period of snow, a rain/snow mix near the coast, and some gusty winds.
While this system will rapidly strengthen offshore, current trends keep the center far enough out to sea that the Tri-State Area is unlikely to see a major snowfall. Still, the storm will come close enough to bring impactful weather to the region. The storm is forecast to intensify quickly on Sunday as it tracks off the Mid-Atlantic coast. By the time it reaches peak strength, it will be well offshore - a key factor limiting the chances of a significant snowfall for the New York City area. However, a frontal boundary extending back toward the Eastern Great Lakes will act as a zone of convergence, allowing bands of snow to develop inland and brush the metro area.Light snow showers may linger through Monday as the storm pulls awayMostly snow with periods of rain mixing in, especially early and near the shorelinePrimarily snow with the potential for steadier bursts depending on how the coastal front interacts with the offshore lowThis is not shaping up to be a high-end snowstorm for the city. Instead, the probability favors a lighter event unless the connection to the offshore low becomes stronger than expected.A major snowfall remains unlikely, though not impossible Areas farther north and west - especially higher elevations - stand a better chance of seeing a bit more snow if the frontal energy sets up favorably. This storm carries "edge-of-the-envelope" uncertainty: the city sits on the western flank of the developing low, meaning small track shifts could influence totals by several inches. That's why snowfall maps are still being fine tuned - the goal is to get the first call right.Snow tapers Monday with lingering snow showers, followed by colder and brighter weather Tuesday. Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg and the Eyewitness News AccuWeather team will continue tracking the Sunday storm closely and update projections as confidence increases.
