The city of Los Angeles issued evacuation warnings for people living in wildfire burn scar areas, after a flood watch was issued for a wide swath of Los Angeles County from Monday morning through Monday evening as a powerful winter storm moves through the region and brings heavy rain and thunderstorms to the area.
Live updates:The National Weather Service said "anyone near vulnerable areas was urged to start taking precautions now,'' adding that severe weather, including small tornadoes, 60 mph winds and one-inch-per-hour rain rates'' are possible. Mayor Karen Bass warned residents in those areas to take precautions and be prepared for potential emergency warnings. Ahead of heavy rain forecasted this week, first responders, Public Works crews, and city personnel are taking action to keep Angelenos safe and will be ready to respond to any potential impacts,'' Bass said in a statement late Saturday. "This is likely to be another significant rain event. All Angelenos -- especially those in burn scar areas -- are encouraged to follow official guidance, use caution on the roads, plan ahead, and stay informed.'' See it belowLos Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda Solis added her own warning for county residents. "Los Angeles County is ready,'' she said Sunday. "Representatives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Fire Department, Department of Public Works, and Office of Emergency Management are working together to prepare and keep our communities safe. "We are also taking steps to protect our most vulnerable residents. Our Department of Homeless Services and Housing is coordinating outreach to ensure individuals in high-risk areas are informed of available resources and connected to shelter during the storm. The county has activated motel vouchers to support augmented existing shelter, and outreach teams will continue active engagement and prioritize motel placements throughout the weekend. "Evacuation warnings are in effect for select parcels near areas burned in recent wildfires ... through 9 a.m. Tuesday ... Residents in those areas are urged to remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate if an evacuation order is issued.''
