Along with purchasing vending machines that will include Narcan, wound care kits and fentanyl test strips, the county intends to use fund from the state's opioid settlement to expand drug treatment services and purchase more harm-reduction supplies.
A new vending machine in Brooklyn that will disperse fentanyl test strips and naloxone as well as hygiene kits, maxi pads, Vitamin C, and COVID-19 tests for free is officially opened on June 5, 2023, in New York City. Operated jointly by Services for the UnderServed and the city Health Department, the vending machine will only ask for a zip code before letting customers choose free items 24 hours a day.
Commissioner George Hartwick said Thursday that the county is expected to use portions of the roughly $1.1 million it will receive as part of thebehind the influx prescriptions opioids in the 1990s and early 2000s to provide harm-reduction supplies to people who need them. Fentanyl is now found in most illicit drug markets across the United States and is the latest iteration of an opioid supply that has continually been gettingof prescription drugs, like oxycontin, and the subsequent legal crackdowns.
“The older generation thinks, ‘why would you give these people anything? Let them be in the position they are in,’” Hartwick said. “I believe that attitude is wrong and I believe we have a responsibility to save lives.”
