Fullmetal Alchemist's Opposite: The Triumph and Triumphant Twist of Daemons of the Shadow Realm
Daemons Of The Shadow RealmFullmetal AlchemistSuccessful Anime

This text explores the differences between 'Daemons of the Shadow Realm', the long-awaited anime adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's latest work, and the popular anime 'Fullmetal Alchemist'. It highlights how the new series is constructed to be the opposite of the iconic anime, featuring a modern setting, supernatural themes, and a tense sibling relationship rather than a pre-existing one.

Warning: Contains spoilers for Daemons of the Shadow Realm. Even 25 years after its debut, Fullmetal Alchemist is still regarded as one of the greatest anime franchises of all time, and it’s hard to argue with that.

Whether it's the original manga, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, or even the first anime with its wildly different narrative, the series always does a phenomenal job of weaving political intrigue with great action and dynamic characters, and the stellar execution of it all makes it one of the best anime for getting newcomers into anime, in general. There’s never been an anime quite like Fullmetal Alchemist, and that’s especially true now with the long-awaited anime adaptation of the creator’s latest work, Daemons of the Shadow Realm.

While the series might be another Bones Film production, even sharing some of Fullmetal Alchemist’s staff, it’s about as different a story from Fullmetal Alchemist as one could imagine, but sure enough, that’s a big part of why it’s already a legend in the making. Daemons Of The Shadow Realm Is Fullmetal Alchemist’s Perfect Opposite Something that’s especially notable about Daemons of the Shadow Realm is that everything about it seems specifically constructed to make it the opposite of Fullmetal Alchemist.

Not only does Daemons of the Shadow Realm’s first episode twist set the story in modern day, with much of the humor derived from Yuru’s complete lack of understanding, but the eponymous Daemons make it an explicitly supernatural story, as opposed to the pseudo-science of Fullmetal Alchemist’s alchemy, and it never lets up on that in the slightest. An even more striking difference can be found in the anime’s main characters, Yuru and Asa.

Not only are they more willing to kill people than Edward and Alphonse, but while much of Fullmetal Alchemist was defined by the Elrics’ brotherly love for one another, Yuru and Asa have a far more tense relationship due to years of separation and Yuru’s distrust of her and her associates, making it a story about building a strong sibling relationship as opposed to a story about a pre-existing one. All of that, of course, is only ever to the strength of Daemons of the Shadow Realm.

Between the urban fantasy setting, a slightly less complicated mystery, and how the characters need to work to gain relationships that used to be guaranteed in Hiromu Arakawa’s work, the series does a great job of inverting Fullmetal Alchemist’s story beats, all while exhibiting all the same incredible action and character writing as well. The result is a story that’s fun to watch, even without the connection to such an iconic anime, and that becomes truer with every passing episode.

Daemons Of The Shadow Realm Is Already Anime Of The Year Material The Daemons of the Shadow Realm anime succeeds thanks in large part to its being the exact opposite of Fullmetal Alchemist; instead of a show where the characters’ relationships are all fixed in place and they’re fighting in a scientific world with specific rules, Daemons of the Shadow Realm sees its heroes constantly working to get to a good place as they deal with fantasy action that’s less strict on what is and isn’t possible, and even without the refreshing contrast, the strong action and character writing would still do wonders to sell it as an amazing anime.

Waugh As it stands, Daemons of the Shadow Realm more than lives up to its hype, both visually and narratively, and if it keeps hitting such constant highs week after week, then it will be an easy contender for anime of the year. There are few anime more exciting than Daemons of the Shadow Realm right now, and with just how high its peaks have been, it’s no surprise that it’s doing a fantastic job of living up to Fullmetal Alchemist’s legacy.
