One of the most common hormonal disorders affecting women has been officially renamed. A UAB doctor who helped lead the change explains why the new name better reflects the condition that affects 10-15% of women and impacts far more than just ovaries.

) - One of the most common hormonal disorders in women has a new name, and a UAB doctor helped make it happen.says the name dates back to the 1970s but can be misleading.

He says many patients hear it and automatically think they must have cysts, but that’s not always the case.

“It affects many aspects of the hormonal system. It affects how the brain controls reproduction. It effects how your insulin and glucose are metabolized. It effects really how your heart functions, and so on,” said Dr. Ricardo Azziz, UAB professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine.

On May 12, doctors officially changed the name to PMOS — or Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome — which better reflects the hormonal condition as a whole. Those with PMOS may have irregular periods, abnormal hair growth, severe acne, weight gain, or trouble getting pregnant. Dr. Azziz has been researching this syndrome for about 40 years. He says understanding the cause requires more research funding, and with millions of women affected, it should be a higher priority.

“A. They’re not alone. B. Many women are affected. C. There are good treatments for many of the problems. And 4th, we need patients and their families to help us advocate with government officials, policy makers, and others to state that this is an important disorder that requires funding for research, that requires support.

That it isn’t just a women’s only minor issue,” Azziz said. Dr. Azziz says name changes can take years to catch on. For the time being, PCOS and PMOS may be used interchangeably until the new name is more widely remembered.
