Zuma, MKP take SABC to court for using "government of national unity"
Following the 29 May general elections, the ANC was forced to share power after it failed to secure an outright majority.
However, some parties in the opposition, including the EFF and ActionSA, labelled the GNU"a grand coalition" between the ANC and DA, insisting that other parties had simply joined to enjoy “luxuries of government”.Zuma and the MKP are the first and second applicants. They argue in papers filed at the Johannesburg High Court on Friday that the term GNU is misleading and inaccurately represents the nature of the current government.
“Within no time, it was accompanied by such similarly inaccurate terms such as 'government of provincial unity or GPU' and/or even 'government of local unity or GLU' referring to similar arrangements in the provincial or local spheres of government, respectively.
The party, which was formed seven months ago, has 58 seats in the National Assembly. Previously it had said it would not collaborate with the ANC if President Cyril Ramaphosa remained in power. Following the ANC's poor performance in the elections, its spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said the party had “repeatedly reached out to the MKP with no positive response” but emphasised that the door for discussions remained open.
The MKP, which was accused of fumbling coalition talks in KwaZulu-Natal where it won 45.35% of the votes to become the leading party in the province, was excluded from coalition talks. It labelled the GNU a"sellout deal by Ramaphosa", who shut out the MKP and “black parties” such as the EFF in talks.Who we choose to trust can have a profound impact on our lives.
