Zosia Mamet Soars on ‘The Flight Attendant’ and Celebrates 10 Years of ‘Girls’

Zosia Mamet feels happy to reintroduce herself on TheFlightAttendant a decade after 'Girls'—and dreams of popping up on 'The Righteous Gemstones.'

tells me during a recent Zoom. She can still remember peeking from the stairs as a child while her parents, playwrighthosted a dinner party. “All the adults were complaining about how they had to go. They were like, ‘We can’t have another glass.

I gotta make it to work in the morning.’ They were all complaining about their jobs,” Mamet remembers. “It made me so sad as a little kid. Obviously, I didn’t totally understand the way the world works as a toddler, but I remember thinking, It’s so sad. You could do anything. Why wouldn’t you do something that you loved?” From that point on, Mamet vowed to pursue acting . She’s now concluded her second season as the sardonic lawyer Annie, best friend toThe well-worn dynamic between the pair shifts in season two—Cassie commits to sobriety and a healthy relationship, while Annie confronts unemployment and an engagement to Max that scares her. The switcheroo was welcome, says Mamet. “Someone in their 30s is kind of expected to have figured it out already,” she explains. “You should know what you’re doing, you should be with your partner, you should be on the correct trajectory. And real life just doesn’t work that way. Everyone works on their own timelines, and sometimes there are hiccups later in life. So to get to play someone seemingly so perfectly together in one season and then essentially turned inside out and starting from scratch in season two was a really exciting thing to do as an actor.” This stagnation bleeds into fan-favorite couple Annie and Max’s relationship, which is tested time and again by her ironclad protective mechanisms. “She lived this life for so long where she did keep everything perfectly in a box and essentially was a lone ranger,” Mamet says. “Throughout season two, we see her testing the boundaries of his love and his patience. Eventually, it takes him threatening to leave for her to finally get her shit together and be like, Oh, my God, I can’t lose this guy.” By the finale’s end, Annie and Max have fought against both criminal couples and their own hang-ups to enjoy a Las Vegas–set wedding. They also have plans to start a P.I. firm, born out of the real-life actors’ running joke about their characters. But the show’s true love story is between Cassie and Annie, which is mirrored in the tight-knit dynamic between Mamet and Cuoco. The pair share two matching tattoos and were even roommates for a time while filming season two. Mamet’s face lights up at the mention of her costar. “This is the best job that I’ve ever gotten for many reasons,” she begins. “I would say the biggest one is that it brought me her, and she’s genuinely become one of the most special, important people to me in my life.” Their bond only strengthened during shooting of the sophomore season. “She was going through a lot; I was going through a lot. The physical shooting of season two was very intense for a myriad of reasons, and we got really exceptionally close,” Mamet says. “Female friendships are such an important thing. I feel really lucky that I have had the opportunity throughout my career to portray those in hopefully very real, human ways.”
