Zora's House, a nonprofit supporting women of color, is reducing its staff and closing its cafe due to shifts in funding priorities, attributed to the political climate. Despite these challenges, the organization vows to continue its core programs. ABC 6 is also providing election updates.
A nonprofit, Zora's House, is cutting more than 25% of its staff and closing one of its programs just a year after a major expansion. The organization attributes these changes to shifts in American politics, specifically funding priorities under the Trump administration.
Zora's House, known for empowering and supporting women of color, will close its Purple Door Cafe this Friday and lay off three of its 11 staff members. "We've been put in between a rock and a hard place when it comes to how are we showing up and serving our communities?" said Zora’s House director of strategy and advancement, Tamaliyapo Mphande. Despite the financial constraints, the nonprofit is determined to maintain its impactful programs focused on wealth building, leadership development, and economic development. The nonprofit's staff described the situation as a love bombing of the Black community, noting the stark contrast between the greatly supported expansion that increased their space fivefold and the current need to scale back. "What has thrown us off is the speed and the level of capitulation that's happening," the Mphande said. Despite the closure of the cafe, Zora's House remains committed to its mission. "There is something that all of us can rally around at the end of this. But we have to stay the course. We have to stay together. The only way through this is together," a Mphande said. The organization, which has been building infrastructure for the Black community in Columbus for seven years, plans to continue its work.EMILYs List backs Dr. Amy Acton for Ohio governor, citing her leadership, resilience, and focus on working families over corporate interests.ABC 6 is keeping you informed with up-to-date election results as each race is called throughout the night.Be sure to refresh this page often for the most accuFire at commercial farm facility in northeast New Albany
