Disney's 'Zootopia 2' has been carving its own path with audiences — and has now landed in the history books.
Walt Disney Pictures has been banking on established brands and franchises for the bulk of its revenue, even before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shrinking theatrical windows and audience engagement have led to essentially a permanent market downturn, so it's unfair broadly to compare cumulative box office revenues through 2019 and since 2020.
The pandemic and SAG and DGA strikes in 2023 have led to a contraction of the industry, too. The impending sale of one of Disney's chief competitors, Warner Bros., to Netflix will also likely hurt cumulative theatregoing. Still, reliable intellectual property has delivered plenty of riches for Disney even during the challenging 2020s. Now, a new Disney franchise entry has set a new box office benchmark in the studio's storied history — unadjusted for inflation. Pamela McClintock of The Hollywood Reporter reveals that, last week, Disney's hotly anticipated sequel Zootopia 2 has displaced Frozen II as the most successful movie in the history of Walt Disney Animation. It's important to note that Walt Disney Animation is a subsidiary of Disney, and that two other animated Disney films have actually made more — Pixar's Inside Out 2 notched a whopping $1.699 billion last summer. This summer's Toy Story 5, also from Pixar, might be looking to better that tally. Frozen II's performance was also hardly chopped liver, however. That blockbuster musical made an astounding $1.453 billion at the 2019, pre-pandemic box office. But that number pales in comparison to the $1.59 billion worldwide haul amassed by Zootopia 2 since the film's Nov. 26, 2025 release. And Zootopia 2 is hardly finished yet. Domestically, the movie dipped an incredible 2.5 percent during its sixth weekend, Jan. 2-4, netting $19.4 million. That brings Zootopia 2's stateside sum to $364 million, and given these awesome holds, it definitely has a shot at cracking $400 million. The second adventure of rabbit cop Judy Hopps and her fox pal Nick Wilde has far outflanked its 2016 predecessor's still-pretty-darn-good $1.025 billion box office take. A Huge 2025 Campaign For Disney Zootopia's success caps another great year at the box office for Disney , which has notched the only three $1 billion-plus grossers from any studio with the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, which made $1.038 billion this summer, and Avatar: Fire & Ash, which has already earned $1.088 billion and counting since its Dec. 19 release. Disney also saw three other 2025 films net north of $300 million and finish among the top 20 global grossers, with MCU franchise entries The Fantastic Four: First Steps , Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* .
