”with a self-described “leftist” magazine it is important to not be embarrassed of criticizing apartheid that allegedly existed in Israel. “It is so, so important that we do not cede any ground to apartheid and to supporters of apartheid and that we be unabashed in our criticism of it,” Assm. Mamdani told South Asian Avant-Garde, adding later he is “somebody who is unabashedly in support of Palestinian liberation.” There is nothing too “banal” when confronting the brutality of Israel’s alleged occupation of Palestinian lands, the lawmaker noted. He explained how drawing a contrast between “investments” in apartheid and a lack of investment in things important to local communities can animate their residents. “I also think there is the argument of connectedness in a kind of, you know, straightforward, ‘as a New Yorker,’ how much of your money is going over there, and how much of your needs are unmet over here,” Assm. Mamdani said. “And, in the same way that we talk about defund the NYPD, the entirety of the push is defund the NYPD and refund all of these different social services and things that actually create safety,” the lawmaker continued. “And, so, I think that when we – we need to connect the struggles against austerity with the struggle against the funding of Israeli apartheid.” He suggested that activists for Palestine connect foreign causes to local communities and organize in order to keep the public engaged in the issues. “With regards to tangible, local actions, I would say that making it clear that it’s not just that our tax dollars fund Israeli oppression, it’s also that our city and state governments have partnerships with Israeli municipalities and the state and that we can hold our governments accountable by really going after those partnerships and really spotlighting them and, you know, with the goal of dismantling them,” Assm. Mamdani said. He accused the New York City Police Department of having a yearslong partnership with the Israeli military to surveil and oppress “marginalized” people. The National News Desk requested comment from the NYPD Friday around 2:40 p.m. but did not receive a response by publication. Assm. Mamdani added that the “reality” of the situation in Palestine, rather than the media, has to “dictate” attention of matters with the area.
