Zoe Lister-Jones says she found it “really cathartic” and “empowering” to direct her own sex scenes for her new series, ‘Slip.’
Flash back to 2020: What was pitched as a two-week lockdown has stretched well beyond the fortnight mark. Grocery stores have designated passing lanes, not that any of them have toilet paper or flour. Hand sanitizer is like gold, and everyone has gotten very familiar with their coworkers’ homes and families viewed through a video chat window. It looks bad; people haven’t gotten ring lights or figured out their best angles yet.
As Mae, Lister-Jones falls into bed with different partners throughout the series, trying on different identities like they’re outfits, questioning which ones feel best . She says she was interested in a woman exploring and embracing her sexuality later in life, and how Mae’s relationship dynamics and life circumstances change with different partners.
And yes, there is a lot of her body in this story—appropriate for a show about orgasms that are literally life-changing. “I mean, listen, it's sort of sociopathic. But it was really cathartic and ultimately empowering to be directing my own sex scenes from within the scenes themselves,” Lister-Jones says. “It was very vulnerable but also thrilling.” In short: “It’s a vibe” to direct herself and her scene partners from within the scene, “basically fully naked.
