A Zion police officer shot a person Thursday evening according to the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.
Christopher Covelli with the Lake County Major Crimes task force said Zion police received a call at about 6:20 p.m. from a person saying their 47-year-old male relative was trying to break into her home in the 2800-block of Ezra Avenue.
The woman said she had an order of protection against the relative. Zion police responded to the call within minutes, officials said. Coveilli said that according to their initial investigation, two officers arrived at the home and found the man near the back door. When they began speaking to him he pulled out a gun, turned to face them, and refused to drop the gun when they ordered him to.
The two officers backed off and the man fled one block west before running into a third Zion police officer, who shot him, police said. The man's gun was recovered at the scene.None of the officers was shot in the incident but the officer who fired the fatal shot was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.
Police said they determined the woman who called them had indeed obtained an order of protection earlier Thursday, but the man had not yet been served with it.Copyright © 2022 WLS-TV. All Rights Reserved.
