Zimbabwe’s women cricketers focus on future

Mitchell Chivare, a 20-year-old who used to play for Zimbabwe’s national junior cricket team, takes her kit off the washing line in preparation for her comeback match as a blistering sun beats down on her back yard at home.

A promising medium-pace swing bowler who at one point was earmarked for her country’s senior team, Chivare has been permitted by her husband to resume playing, but some of her former team-mates have not been as fortunate.I have many friends who were very good at cricket, but they stopped playing due to early marriages. Their husbands don’t want them to play sports

“We’ve lost many girls to early marriages. We’d groomed some of them for the national team,” he says. “In most cases, their husbands have forbidden them to return to the sport. Still, we hope they’ll come back one day.”Chivare said she got married younger than she had expected, giving birth to her first child 18 months ago and her second two months ago. Now, with her mother able to care for both babies, she is free once more to pursue her dream of representing Zimbabwe as a full international.
