Zimbabwe Govt Workers Say 100% Salary Increment InsufficientZimbabwe Govt Workers Say 100% Salary Increment InsufficientThe government has increased civil servants' salaries by 100% as it tries to fulfil a promise to stagger the wage increment for employees ahead of Zimbabwe's general elections, expected to be held in July or August 2023. However, workers have rejected the salary increment, saying it was inadequate as it will result in the lowest paid teacher earning below the poverty datum line. Instead, they demanded restoration of their 2018 salaries that were paid in U.S. dollars, when they earned between U.S.$520 and U.S.$550 per month, or its equivalent in local currency. Since President Emmerson Mnangagwa took office in November 2017, teachers have continually been protesting, demanding salary hikes. Meanwhile doctors and nurses have also downed tools on several occasions, demanding U.S. dollar salaries. For years, they have been arguing that their salaries have been reduced to nothing due to high inflation. Zimbabwe's economy has been on a downturn for over a decade characterized by scarcity of foreign currency. President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who took over from Robert Mugabe, pledged to revive the country's economy but economic woes which plagued the late former president Robert Mugabe's rule have persisted.

Free and Fair Elections in Zimbabwe? Scepticism Rises ...Free and Fair Elections in Zimbabwe? Scepticism Rises ...Zimbabwe will hold elections this year, and concerns have already been raised about the impartiality of the electoral commission. Political analysts have raised the alarm after changes at the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), warning that if not managed correctly, it could have an impact on the standard of this year's polls. The commission has announced that Chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba, her deputy Rodney Kiwa and Chief Elections Officer Utoile Silaigwana will be solely responsible for ZEC's communication affairs, a development that has raised eyebrows, with some questioning the timing of the changes. According to Afrobarometer, young Zimbabweans are less likely than their elders to vote, possibly because their experience has taught them that polls are not an effective way to get the government to serve their needs. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has yet to announce the exact date for the vote, but it has revealed that it would be held in either July or August 2023. The main political parties for the 2023 elections remain the Zanu-PF, which has been in power since independence in 1980, and the opposition Citizens Coalition For Change, formed in 2022 and led by Nelson Chamisa.
