The Legend of Zelda is celebrating its 40th birthday as a franchise, and there have been plenty of notable highs in that time, with everyone having their own particular favorites, usually based on what games came out at that perfect time as they were growing up.
For many, that peak is still marked by Ocarina of Time, and it's difficult to argue against that, with the game striking a perfect balance between interesting storytelling and fun gameplay to create a genuinely compelling and memorable package that still holds up relatively well today. Interestingly, even after all this time, there are still new ways to experience it, and what better way to do so than by inviting a few friends along for the ride? Did You Know You Can Play Ocarina Of Time With Friends? As first reported by GAMINGbible, it is actually possible to play Ocarina of Time as a multiplayer experience thanks to Anchor, an unofficial co-op mod that has since been rolled into the Ship of Harkinian project, which allows the game to run natively on modern hardware with plenty of advantages over the original including 60 FPS, widescreen support, 4K resolution, and mod support without using an emulator. The multiplayer mod itself supports up to four players working through the story together, and it gives us a window into what Zelda could have been like if they had pushed further into the concept of multiplayer, beyond relatively underwhelming releases like Four Swords Adventures. It also comes with additional features that make the experience feel a little more native to the game, with inventory sharing and world flags included as part of the package. It's also available entirely for free via the GitHub page for the mod, so you can download it yourself and try it out without any risk to your personal finances. Multiplayer Zelda Is Absolute Chaos As you might expect, adding multiplayer to a game that was never designed to have it in the first place is a pretty wild thing to do, and the resultant chaos is honestly a thing of beauty. The only caveat here is that things can get a little janky as you work through the story in terms of everyone progressing equally, but it can usually be rectified with regular saving and the occasional reload along the way. That said, as a price to play for multiplayer Ocarina of Time, it's a pretty light penalty overall.
