Having had a junior career as decorated as it was record-breaking, precocious 400m hurdler Sokwakhana Zazini has, for myriad reasons, found the going somewhat tougher in the senior ranks.
He moved to his third coach in three years when he joined former South African 400m runner Paul Gorries. “We’d just started working on all the things we need to fix with Soks in terms of his running technique and stride pattern when Covid-19 happened,” says Gorries, who is Tuks’ sprints coach and Athletics SA’s relays coach.
His linking up with a coach who was a pure sprinter, as opposed to a hurdling expert, will also have the powers that be a little apprehensive about his development in his event until the results start vindicating the partnership. Given Zazini’s brilliant talent, there is an understandable fear from the athletics establishment that the youngster from Burgersdorp in the Eastern Cape could lose his way despite his immense promise, especially after what happened last year.
