The trial of former eThekwini mayor, Zandile Gumede, and her 21 co-accused is due to resume in the Durban High Court on Monday morning.

Her co-accused include former municipal manager, Sipho Nzuza, and some former ANC councillors. They face charges that include fraud and corruption in connection with a multi-million rand waste removal tender in 2017.

State prosecutor, Advocate Ashika Luckan, has argued in court that Gumede received kickbacks after she allegedly steered the awarding of contracts to certain companies. In March, the second state witness, senior investigator of the city’s integrity unit, Shaun Hitler, told the court that a decision to appoint Integrity Forensic Services to investigate the matter was taken verbally.

Guinea's 2009 Conakry Stadium Massacre Trial ResumesGuinea's 2009 Conakry Stadium Massacre Trial ResumesThe landmark trial of Guinea's former president and 10 others, including former ministers, accused of being responsible for the massacre and rapes in the Conakry stadium in 2009, resumed on Monday, July 10, 2023, after being suspended for a month and a half. The trial is broadcast live on Guinea television and has kept the nation riveted. Prior to the trial's suspension - which was over a boycott by the defence counsel, with solidarity from the victims' lawyers, followed by a nationwide prison guard strike - the judges heard all 11 accused and moved to a second phase of the trial, during which they heard dozens of victims. The trial's resumption is a relief for victims and their families, who have long waited for justice for the massacre. On Monday, July 10, 2023, the proceedings took a surprise turn when the hearing of victims by the judges was interrupted to give the floor to one of the accused, former presidential guard member Captain Marcel Guilavogui, who requested to take the floor a second time. Guivalogui said the former president, Moussa Dadis Camara, along with others, planned and executed the 2009 crimes. The former president's lawyers have continued to deny his involvement.
