The nominees for this year’s SA Music Awards (Samas) were unveiled on Tuesday and there doesn’t seem to be too many surprises on the list

Bantwini is nominated in the categories for best male, best dance album, best engineered album and the highly coveted album of the year and record of the year. The selfless thing to do would be for the Samas to do away with holding the ceremony at Sun City, and perhaps put more of that funding towards cash prizes for artists.

Amapiano is the new flavour of the nation, but the Samas are still showing love for gqom music…it’s adorable, really. The amapiano category included Yung Stunna who enjoyed a momentous run. His album Notumato is on deck as is Focalistic’s President Ya Strata. Singer and songwriter Msaki also got the nod for the best produced album for her Platinumb Hearts offering. She could also scoop the female artist of the year award, which would be another one to watch as heavy hitters Kamo Mphela and Shekhinah lie in wait. The best produced music video category was a little odd as it featured AKA, who released what was easily his worst project to date, Bhovamania, but hey, it’s just for a visual treatment accolade.

The best hip-hop album of the year has already been won in the minds of some – B4Now by Blxckie, who was arguably the most impactful newcomer to the local rap scene. But, he has stiff competition from the likes of A-Reece and 25K.Phumlani S Langa
