Right-hander Zac Gallen extended his scoreless streak early on Sunday afternoon, getting a little help from center fielder Daulton Varsho.
DENVER — With a scoreless first inning, Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen established a record for the longest scoreless streak in club history at 42 1/3 innings.Gallen was helped in the first inning by a tremendous diving catch by center fielder Daulton Varsho, who raced in when the Rockies’ Ryan McMahon lined the first pitch of the game to center. Had Varsho come up empty, it could have turned into an inside-the-park home run.
It was the second impressive catch Varsho has made behind Gallen in as many starts. Last weekend at Chase Field, Varsho made a running catch in the gap to take a hit away from the Brewers’ Tyrone Taylor.
