Zac Gallen struck out a career-high 12 in 7 1/3 innings, extending his shutout streak and pitching the Arizona Diamondbacks past the San Francisco Giants 5-0 on Thursday.
SAN FRANCISCO — There were two strikes and two out in the seventh inning when it suddenly became apparent just how overpowering Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen’s stuff must have been on Thursday afternoon.
“I think just getting ahead early; I think that’s a big one,” Gallen said. “I felt like I was ahead early and I felt like I was able to put them away after one or two pitches.” “It was just a pretty dominating performance,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “He was feeling it and it was a lot of fun for all of us to watch.”
The sequence with Belt stood out given the situation, but he was not the first veteran Giants hitter to try to drop down a two-strike bunt against Gallen on Thursday. One inning earlier, Brandon Crawford did the same; he also bunted foul. “I took my best route I thought would keep the inning going,” Belt said. “I’m not going to say I was right, but that was the decision I made. I wanted to keep the inning going. Unfortunately, I didn’t get it down.”
