Halls Creek's aged care home serves a vast area with many Indigenous cultural groups, and now a local Aboriginal health service hopes to boost the facility that's struggled in recent years with compliance breaches.
Yura Yungi Medical Service is taking over Halls Creek 's aged care home to improve the service for local Indigenous people.There are now plans to improve the facility and employ more Indigenous staff in senior positions.
There is hope new management will build on improvements made to the service in the past 12 months, after a series of audits, about the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, revealed serious deficiencies, in particular around cleanliness, cultural care, staff retention and governance.YYMS chief executive Brenda Garstone said the organisation had spent years working towards the goal of becoming an aged care provider with support from the federal government.
A federal compliance inspection last year noted improvements in that area with the employment of new lifestyle workers, which allowed residents to take part in culturally driven social activities in the community."In our cultural cook up, kangaroo tails are cooked traditionally on the ground in the coals," she said.
"And to just have someone like her and then move into registered nursing and then eventually a local clinical manager, I think the old people would just love that."Tony Nungactha spoke to the ABC on the aged care home's front porch and reflected on his time as a stockman at Nicholson Station.
