A review of Yuan, a new Chinese restaurant in Jersey City's Newport neighborhood, exploring its menu, ambiance, and comparison to its acclaimed sibling, Peppercorn Station.
Yuan , a new Chinese restaurant, opened its doors in Jersey City 's Newport neighborhood in August, just a short distance from its acclaimed sibling, Peppercorn Station . Like Peppercorn, Yuan serves up both traditional Sichuan and contemporary Chinese cuisine, but with a focus on classic comfort food rather than experimental dishes. With nearly 80 items on its menu, Yuan boasts a wider selection compared to Peppercorn Station .
The restaurant's ambiance draws inspiration from the owners' childhood memories of a communal garden, featuring lush tropical plants throughout the space. This creates a warm and inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a gathering place for friends and neighbors. While Yuan may not possess the Michelin-starred stature of Peppercorn, it offers a more approachable and casual dining experience. A standout appetizer was the stir-fried squid, expertly cooked to retain its delicate texture. The dish was enhanced by a harmonious blend of fresh chives, coriander, garlic, and onion, complemented by the subtle yet satisfying numbing sensation of Sichuan peppercorn oil. Another notable dish was the beef with truffle, a testament to Yuan's commitment to quality ingredients. The potent truffle flavor was expertly balanced by tender chunks of beef and large pieces of garlic, creating an aromatic and unforgettable culinary experience. The restaurant also offers a variety of seafood options, including a whole barramundi cooked in a savory, flavorful sauce. The fish itself was incredibly flaky and juicy, and the sauce provided a perfect balance of saltiness and sweetness. For dessert, the brown sugar glazed rice cakes were a delightful treat. The crispy caramelized exterior gave way to a chewy, soft center, making for a satisfying and not-too-heavy finish to the meal. However, the soup dumplings were a bit of a disappointment. While the broth in the crab roe dumplings was sweet, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, the filling lacked flavor. The pork dumplings fared no better, leaving a desire for more depth and complexity. The caramel pudding, while well-presented, was also underwhelming. It lacked the expected sweetness and was quite small, disappearing in a couple of bites. Overall, Yuan offers a pleasant dining experience with its spacious ambiance, attractive decor, and a menu featuring both familiar favorites and some innovative twists. While it may not reach the same heights as its Michelin-starred sibling, it provides a solid alternative for those seeking a more casual and approachable Chinese dining experience
