WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 10: Subcommittee Chairwoman Sen. Marsha Blackburn arrives for a hearing on "Arctic Frost Accountability: Oversight of Telecommunications Carriers' Responses to Jack Smith's Witch Hunt" in the Hart Senate Office Building on February 10, 2026 in Washington, DC.
The Privacy, Technology, and the Law Subcommittee brought in current and former telecommunications executives and government officials to testify about Jack Smith's investigation into President Donald Trump. A sweeping law enforcement crackdown in Memphis has led to a dramatic drop in crime, with overall offenses down 43% since last fall, according to new data.called the turnaround a “clear example” of what can happen when federal, state and local officials coordinate on public safety. The Tennessee Republican said the effort began after she raised concerns during confirmation hearings for federal officials, helping spur a multi-agency task force launched in September. Since then, authorities have made more than 9,000 arrests, recovered hundreds of illegal weapons, and located roughly 150 missing children. “That overall crime drop is really quite amazing,” Blackburn said. “People in Memphis are saying, ‘let’s keep it going.’” Memphis had previously ranked among the most dangerous cities per capita, with residents fearful of gang violence and crime spilling into neighborhoods. Blackburn credited local leadership, including the city’s mayor and police chief, alongside federal partners such as the FBI and Department of Justice, for the results.Blackburn touts Kids Online Safety Act after court ruling“This is a product safety issue,” she said. “Every product in America has safety features. Doesn't matter if it’s a car, a toaster, or a mattress." Blackburn said the same standard should apply in the virtual space. The proposed legislation would require social media companies to give users, particularly minors, more control over algorithm-driven content. That includes the ability to “delink” from recommendation systems that can push harmful material, such as content tied to self-harm, eating disorders, or cyberbullying. “When you cannot delink, you cannot stop what is being offered to you,” Blackburn said. “And that is the addictive nature of this.” She added that recent court decisions in multiple states signal growing recognition that platform design, not just content, is at the heart of the issue.over funding for the Department of Homeland Security , warning that failure to pass a funding measure could keep impacting agencies including FEMA, the Secret Service, Coast Guard and TSA. She criticized Democrats for backing away from a bipartisan appropriations deal and opposing a narrower measure to fund the Transportation Security Administration. With negotiations stalled, Blackburn suggested Republicans may pursue a workaround through the budget reconciliation process, which would allow passage with a simple majority in the Senate.
