State Rep. Lyle Larson holds his ground on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives during bill readings at the 87th Texas legislative session in March 2021. A reader writes that the state is going to miss Larson’s principled conservatism.I started watching the Sept. 30 gubernatorial debate, and it became laughable. The candidates were given only 60 seconds to answer a question before the bell, which sounded like a bicycle ringer, was slammed.
Sixty seconds is woefully inadequate to answer these serious questions. The debate was to address critical issues facing our state, not become a game show or a speed-dating event. The candidates were frustrated, and so was I. The point of a debate is to understand the issues and the proposed solutions. Bottom line, it was an embarrassment.Re: “Public schools taxing, too,” Your Turn, Oct. 2:
Private schools tout good academic outcomes, but those are not necessarily because of the school. Per the Individuals and Disabilities Education Act, neither of these types of schools are required to teach students with special needs, and they, along with charter schools, almost never retain students with behavioral problems.
In this day and age, I wish we had more people with common sense, ethics, character, scruples and integrity like state Rep. Lyle Larson and former House Speaker Joe Straus.
