William Luther, StaffYes, Nancy M. Preyor-Johnson, when a state devalues teachers, the future looks dim for both teachers and students. So like “The Great Gatsby,” they beat on, boats against the current, knowing full well their hard work will not be appreciated. And as the great classic economist Adam Smith discovered, a state that does not value — and financially support — universal public education is not on a road to future wealth and happiness.
The child tax credit was probably the single most effective anti-abortion legislation ever enacted. Now, go down the list of the “pro-life” senators and congressmen who opposed it and voted down its extension.Re: “Time for symphony musicians to face reality,” Another View, April 30: I was interested to read that Austin has a symphony orchestra with a $5 million budget, so I did some research to see how they do it. I learned it’s a part-time gig for the musicians, not a day job.
I know our San Antonio Symphony is a day job, with full-time professional performing musicians. If aspiring to less reflects the symphony management’s vision, they should step down.
