While the pandemic drags on, and we reflect on Winter Storm Uri and other crises take our attention, a reader expresses his gratitude for the avocado shortage getting fixed ASAP.This letter is an apology to my three grandchildren. I am sorry for the state of racial, environmental and political affairs that I leave you. I’m 74, an age when one considers their legacy.

On race, I like to think I’m not a racist, but truth be told I have prejudices, as we all do. Over the past couple years, the prejudices we have as a country have festered terribly, to the point that I am ashamed of my countrymen. Or country persons, to be correct. The environment, specifically climate change, is another embarrassment. I retired as an environmental engineer, so I feel like I did some good for the environment, yet other than an occasional letter published in this paper, I have had no impact on climate change. I have not even convinced my conservative friends that it exists.

Politics, of course, overarches everything and, therefore, deserves the most heartfelt apology. I vote for commonsense, hopefully honest candidates every chance I get, yet we have a heartless gridlock while autocrats are kicking our butts on the world stage. So, wonderful grandchildren, I apologize and sincerely hope you can find solutions to the mess that my generation is leaving you.Thank you for the periodic puzzle books. I particularly enjoy the crosswords, especially Frank Longo’s. He is such fun.
