A reader says “Ukrainians are fighting our war, not just theirs,” and worries about what might come should Russia take Ukraine. It’s become commonplace to hear “Our thoughts and prayers are with them” whenever there is a mass shooting or, in this case, the atrocities committed against the Ukrainian people. A nice sentiment, but what changes?
There is no appetite in certain circles to enact gun control legislation. As for the Ukrainians, providing them with weapons in all likelihood will extend the war until they are eventually overpowered by Russian forces.
There is an autocrat with nuclear weapons who probably has more than Ukraine in mind. Military exercises became an invasion, and daily more and more devastation has followed. If this autocrat conquers Ukraine, he has a foothold into Europe and beyond. The Ukrainians are fighting our war, not just theirs. If the free world doesn’t take a more involved posture and attitude, gas prices will be the least of our concerns. It appears Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Attorney General Ken Paxton, Gov. Greg Abbott and some leaders of other states missed out on human development biology instruction in high school or college. Some remediation seems in order.
Or perhaps people running for the Legislature and higher state offices should pass tests related to such biological information. Instead of banning books for kids, maybe we should provide biology textbooks for office-seeking adults.
