The effects people have on each other can be subtle, she said. It’s not as if genes are jumping between whispering buddies in the high school cafeteria. The study showed the effects were stronger for substance abuse than for mental health issues and were more easily seen in later grades, she said. The research also found your high school peers seemed to have more of an effect on you than peers from your neighborhood.
