Remember: blood donations are made to save lives, even lives you may know.
Within the transfusion services department at Southeast Health, there is a team joining the fight to save lives by issuing blood crucial to patients’ survival.
“We have had so many traumas come through that just are heartbreaking, when you hear the call and don’t think somebody can survive,” Patty Potter, LifeSouth’s transfusion services supervisor said. “We don’t have direct patient contact, but we fight for those patients. So, we go out of our way to get the blood products out of here to the patient to help them.”That blood comes from people in this area who donated through LifeSouth.
“Everything is 100% coming through them,” Potter said. “All of that blood that’s collected comes back to us here in the hospitals in the Wiregrass.”“It’s used in all sorts of ways. We are a level 2 trauma center, so a lot of our products go quickly to any incoming traumas that we have. We do a lot of surgeries; sometimes those require blood. We also have a lot of cancer patients that come through here,” Potter said.“It’s so needed because things can change in a matter of seconds,” Potter said.
