Glenn Youngkin, the private-equity boss-turned-Republican nominee for Virginia governor, wants to keep his gubernatorial bid focused on Democrats, not Republican divisions over former President Donald Trump

DUMFRIES, Va.—Glenn Youngkin, the private-equity boss-turned-Republican nominee for Virginia governor, is so new to politics that many Virginia GOP activists had never heard of him.

“He was a virtual unknown,” said Rich Anderson, a longtime GOP activist in Virginia and head of the state Republican Party. Mr. Anderson described Mr. Youngkin’s best asset as being a “blank page” with no government record, making it potentially harder for Democrats to define him and easier for GOP voters of all stripes to see themselves in him. “I’ve been amazed that he’s been able to appeal broadly to the entire Republican spectrum,” said Mr.

To beat likely Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe, Mr. Youngkin will almost certainly have to rise above the GOP infighting that has plagued Republicans in Washington this year by accepting support from all elements of his party. Those would include “a group of forever Trumpers or a group of never Trumpers,” he said in an interview. Even before former President Donald Trump won the White House in 2016, the state GOP was divided for years by disputes between its conservative and moderate wings.

Roughly 100 Republicans from all corners of the party gathered recently in this small town in Prince William County outside Washington, D.C., to hear from Mr. Youngkin. He said the election wouldn’t be an easy path without “Republicans standing up and locking arms” on protecting law enforcement, lowering taxes and reopening schools and businesses.
