The Golden Bears and Huskies both graduated a wealth of talent and leadership.

Members of the Juneau football team take the field for the ASAA Division I championship football game against Colony High School in Anchorage on Friday, Oct. 21, 2022.

Juneau head coach Rich Sjoroos described his 2023 squad as “a group of unproven guys that are anxious and eager to show what they can do.” Even though they’ve lost a lot of talent in the trenches as well as their star running back and inside linebacker in Alailefaleula, Bartlett head coach Chance Matsuoka doesn’t see their departures “being an issue” when it comes to how they want to operate on offense.

“They’re looking forward instead of looking back, and we’re just trying to play our best football every week,” he said.A focal point in the Juneau offense this year will be junior wide receiver Jayden Johnson, who also plays defensive back. Taking over the role of their leading running back will be junior Hayden Aube, who was the starter on junior varsity and will be tasked with filling the shoes of 2022 all-conference selection Jamal Johnson. While the vast majority of this year’s Juneau team doesn’t have any varsity experience, the Huskies are still very familiar with each other, having been on junior varsity together last year.

“I think I will because my team will back me up,” Deuce Alailefaleula said. “I’ll make my plays, they’ll make their plays, and we’ll go 100% every play.”The two siblings got to play together for the first time last year when Deuce was pulled up from junior varsity, and now he’s slated to be a standout two-way player as well as sophomore tight end and nose guard.
