A Gallup poll shows an increasing negative view about alcohol among young people. More young people now think alcohol is more risky than cannabis, the Gallup poll found.CLEVELAND, Ohio — Most Americans now believe marijuana is less harmful than alcohol, Gallup polling suggests, driven largely by the feelings of young adults.
Overall, Gallup found 58% of American adults said they believed marijuana was very or somewhat harmful, while a higher share - 80% - said alcohol was so. Boyd isn’t surprised that alcohol may be falling out of favor with young adults due to its health effects. This year, the“When I started my career, a glass of wine a night was considered healthy,” Boyd said. “We now know that there’s no amount of alcohol that’s healthy.”Here are some highlights from the most recent Gallup poll, conducted in July with a sample of about 1,000 American adults.
However, Boyd cautioned that attitudes are hard to quantify when survey questions don’t include specifics about how cannabis is ingested. Gallup acknowledged, “In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.”Data from other national surveys add more context to changing attitudes about alcohol and cannabis.
