Governments can help a bit. They should certainly avoid doing harm, as I am afraid this Government is doing. But my instinct is that the big driver of change will be social, not political. The more it becomes the norm – the right and proper thing to do – for older people to stay in work, the easier it will be for our society to cope with ageing.

Not a good idea for the young to think the old are hanging around too long, even if the old do have the votes.My personal perspective on the extent to which older people can be kept in the workforce is coloured by the fact that, as a writer, you can carry on working as long as people want to publish your stuff. Some successful novelists only began to write after what, for most people, would be retirement age.
